WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY RISK-TAKING AND EXPERIMENTATION?

We define risk-taking and experimentation as pushing at the boundaries of discipline and form or unconventional and innovative approaches to community engagement and reaching audiences or critical analyses of histories and contexts. This grant is meant for artists to lead the way in thinking through what kind of spaces, platforms, opportunities, and collaborations can help sustain their practice and communities, and we welcome creative ways of thinking.

CAN I APPLY FOR MY INDIVIDUAL STUDIO ART PRACTICE IF IT WILL BE EXHIBITED IN PUBLIC?

NEW PROJECTS or ONGOING PLATFORMS are for collaborative projects and do not support individual studio production or exhibition. Sustaining Practice is open to both individuals and collaborations. For NEW PROJECTS or ONGOING PLATFORMS, all kinds of visual art production is welcomed, but there must be some collaborative or community-oriented ethos to the project. For example, if you are an individual studio artist, you can apply for an exhibition organized with a set of peers that may also include your work. Mural artists are welcome to apply, but there must be some collaborative vision and process connected to the work. Please visit our selection criteria on our Overview page for further information.

CAN I BE COLLABORATING WITH A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION?

Yes, projects can be presented at nonprofits as venues or in partnership; however, all projects must be operating autonomously and managed independently from the host organization. We recognize that 501(c)(3) organizations can have limited program budgets, but this grant is oriented toward artist-led initiatives and not toward supplementing organizational funding gaps. Publications or ongoing projects that originated at organizations or through institutional support are eligible, but at the stage of application must be managed and led by the applicants.

CAN NONPROFIT ORGANIZATIONS APPLY?

No, this grant is for artist-driven and -led projects.

CAN I APPLY TO MORE THAN
ONE TIER?

No, please select one tier per lead applicant. The SUSTAINING PRACTICE tier is open to those in a developmental process, NEW PROJECTS is for a new work and collaborations, and ONGOING PROJECTS recognizes platforms that are more longstanding and in need of funds to support longer-term visions and contributions to their communities.

IF I RECEIVE A COLLECTIVE FUTURES FUND GRANT, CAN I APPLY AGAIN THE NEXT YEAR?

If you receive a SUSTAINING PRACTICE grant, you are eligible to apply the following year for continued support through the NEW PROJECTS category. If you receive a NEW PROJECTS or ONGOING PLATFORMS grant, you are eligible to apply again after two years.

ARE CURATORIAL PROJECTS ELIGIBLE?

Yes, applications can come from visual artists who are engaged in curatorial projects or curators leading independent projects.

CAN I SUBMIT MULTIPLE PROJECTS?

Applicants can be the lead organizer on more than one proposal at any given time, though in this case, only one of their projects will be funded. Alternatively, applicants can be listed as collaborators on multiple proposals without affecting their eligibility on projects where they are designated as the lead artist.

CAN I PAY ARTIST FEES OR STIPENDS WITH GRANT FUNDS?

Yes, we expect you to pay the people involved in your project, including yourself, for their contributions. W.A.G.E. guidelines may be helpful to calculating these fees.

CAN I PURCHASE EQUIPMENT WITH GRANT FUNDS?

Yes, as long as the equipment is necessary for the development of your project.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A U.S. CITIZEN TO APPLY?

No, but the artist/lead organizer must have a social security number in order to receive payment of the award, and these funds are taxable. Additional collaborators and/or participants do not need to be US citizens or have social security numbers. The Collective Futures Fund will provide a tax workshop for grantees.

CAN I APPLY TO SUPPORT A WEB-BASED PROJECT?

Yes, web-based projects (blogs, podcasts etc.) are eligible, as long as their content is related to visual art.

ARE YOU STILL DOING EMERGENCY RELIEF?

Not at this time; we may revisit emergency funding in the future.

IF I RECEIVE A COLLECTIVE FUTURES FUND GRANT, DOES THAT MEAN I CAN SAY I GOT A GRANT FROM THE ANDY WARHOL FOUNDATION?

No. You can say that you have received a Collective Futures Fund Grant from Tufts University Art Galleries.

IF I RECEIVE A COLLECTIVE FUTURES FUND GRANT, CAN I APPLY AGAIN THE NEXT YEAR?

If you receive a Sustaining Practice grant, you are eligible to apply the following year for continued support through the NEW PROJECTS OR ONGOING PLATFORMS category. If you receive a NEW PLATFORMS or ONGOING PLATFORMS grant, you are eligible to apply again after two years.
